In a 25-second clip released by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation last week, Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, the French President Emmanuel Macron, and Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, were seen joking about Trump’s continuous lateness to bilateral meetings. During the NATO summit held on Tuesday, Trudeau can be heard saying, “He was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top. You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor,” while Macron responded with some hand gestures and words that couldn’t be heard clearly. It looked like the three leaders were not aware their conversation was being recorded.
This viral clip didn’t go unnoticed as a lot of people had their two cents to say about it. Saturday Night Live did more than giving their two cents, though. They went on to satirize President Trump’s relationship with these NATO leaders a few days after the video surfaced. The short skit started with a summary of the exchange between the three leaders. Then, the audience was told that they “should have seen what happened in the NATO cafeteria” during the summit. Jimmy Fallon acted as Justin Trudeau, Boris Johnson was played by James Corden, Paul Rudd played the role of Emmanuel Macron and Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump. Accompanied by loud background music, Trudeau and Macron both entered into the cafeteria. The first words were from a Denmark delegate:
“Look! It’s Trudeau and Macron. They’re so cool,”
Trudeau and Macron are followed closely by Johnson, who sits with them on one of the lunch tables. Not long after, Trump walks in with his lunch tray containing some hamburgers. He makes his way towards their table, but Macron turns to the others saying,
“Quiet! It’s Trump. Did you see him speak for 45 minutes the other day? It was just supposed to be for a photo.”
Rudd’s Macron was referring to the remarks Trump made at the NATO summit while he sat with Macron.
“Well, if I looked like him, I’d try to distract the photographer too,” came the reply from Fallon’s Trudeau.
This joke from Trudeau prompted Corden’s Johnson to add, “He’s not good looking like us three.”
Not surprisingly, both Macron and Trudeau refused to let Trump sit at their table when he asked. They claimed that it was reserved for someone else who wanted to sit at that spot.
“We’d love to see you talk and chew at the same time, but we promised this seat to a friend,” came the response from Rudd’s Macron.
While Baldwin’s Trump talks to them, the three leaders all say lovely things about his physical appearance. However, as soon as he moves away, they start gossiping about him while Fallon’s Trudeau went ahead to call him a “mess.”
“He’s, like, dumber than Boris,” Fallon’s Trudeau added.
When Baldwin’s Trump realized later that he had been sent to the “loser’s table,” he quipped, “I can’t believe they made me sit with the foreign kid.”
The three leaders rejected his second request to sit with them as Rudd’s Macron claimed that the seat was reserved for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a role played by Kate McKinnon. The skit ended with McKinnon’s Merkel saying, “Am I actually about to sit at the cool kids’ table?” soon after arriving.
In response to the clip, President Trump referred to Justin Trudeau as “two-faced”.
